Chapter 9

I had a lot to think about; a lot to figure out, and I was clearly on a deadline, since they kept pressuring me.

“What’s the rush anyway?” I said in frustration to Ryder. “Why do I have to decide right now?”

For the first time since I had known him, Ryder was silent. He just sat down in the chair and looked at his feet, saying nothing. I turned from him to Jace, who also stood in silence, his head down.

“Jace?”

Still, they did not answer me. My tone softened now, and I could feel in my gut that something was wrong.

“Guys, what’s going on?” I asked, walking over to the both of them, putting my hand on Ryder’s hand and my other on Jace’s shoulder.

It was Jace who finally spoke. “Our father,” he said, letting out a long sigh. “He is not well. He doesn’t have long.”

“He will die,” Ryder blurted out.

“What? But I thought wolves were immortal?”

“Nearly immortal,” Jace corrected. “But we can and do die. And it’s Dad’s time.”

Now the pieces were starting to come together for me. When their father died, they would have to step up as Alpha in the pack. Without a clearly defined, strong leader, the neighboring packs could try to overthrow them and either take them in as their own, or kill them all.

And an Alpha required a mate. It was Pack Code.

“I see,” I said softly, looking from one brother to another. In that moment, I realized how selfish I had been, only thinking about myself and my own needs. They needed me. The whole pack needed me. While training me, teaching me, feeding me and loving me, they also knew all along that without me, their pack might not be able to survive the passing of their father. “I understand now. I will do what I can to help.”

“Thank you, Zoe,” Jace said, sadness in his voice.

“You will let us know your decision by the end of the week?” Ryder asked, but it sounded more like a statement.

“Yes,” I agreed, with trepidation in my voice because I had no idea what I was going to do now.

After they left, I knew I needed to be alone to think.

The call of the wolf was loud in my ears.

I went outside, stripped bare, tucked my neatly folded clothes behind the big oak that had become my favorite, and then I ran.

I ran and ran, and I didn’t look back. The wind in my fur, the brush under my paws… it was exhilarating, liberating, and exciting. I felt at one with the forest, Mother Nature carrying me on her back as I ran faster and faster still.

I must not have realized how far I had gone because when I crashed right into another wolf, I knew instantly that he was not a Woodland.
